4. RESULTS This chapter begins by presenting results from the primary data collection in Canada, followed by the comparison between the Canadian and European situations. Limitations to this comparison are also discussed. 4.1. CANADIAN MAIL SURVEY 4.1.1. Response Rate There were two mail outs, the first in November 2002 and the second in February 2003. The time delay between the two mailings was decided in order to avoid the Christmas season. Dillman (2000) suggests that, during this time of the year, not only are people on holidays, but there is also an increased likelihood of postal delivery mistakes. On November 18, 2002, four hundred and twenty questionnaires were sent to each wood products plant or division that had kiln drying facilities across Canada. Subsequently, 103 completed surveys were returned from the first mailing. An additional 35 were returned to sender because the plant had moved or the address was unknown. Three were returned blank because the companies did not operate kilns any longer. Figure 6 shows the number of responses per week for both mailings. 41PDF Image | KILN DRYING PROBLEMS AND ISSUES IN CANADA
