Capstone Circuit Requirements The circuit to which the MicroTurbine is connected should be rated 45 kVA minimum, and should be able to absorb up to 30 kVA with less than 10 percent (10%) voltage rise. The selected output voltage of the MicroTurbine and applicable regulations will determine circuit ampacity requirements. Each MicroTurbine produces up to 43 amps on each phase at 400 VAC, 42 amps at 415 VAC, and 36 amps at 480 VAC (in the grid connect mode, output voltages have a unity (1.0) power factor). For example, the United States National Electric Code (NEC) requires a branch circuit to be rated not less than 125% of rated load (NEC 220-3). Per NEC, typical minimum circuit ampacities would be as follows: Capstone Customer Service Toll Free 1-(877) 282-8966 www.capstoneturbine.com Voltage 480 415 400 Ampacity Breaker Size (Amps) 36 50 42 60 43 60 Breakers / Fused Disconnects A UL listed circuit breaker or fused disconnect with visible air gap must be installed between the MicroTurbine and the user’s electrical subpanel, at a distance no greater than 25 feet from the MicroTurbine. The type of disconnect and fault- current ratings of the device must meet local codes ! WARNING: When installing the circuit breaker or fused disconnect, ensure the equipment meets the maximum fault current rating specified by the local utility. All equipment must be properly grounded Transformers Applications with connect circuit voltages other than 400-480 VAC will require installation of an additional transformer for the Capstone MicroTurbineTM. A transformer, when required, must have wye configuration on the MicroTurbine side, and a minimum rating of 45 kVA. The center of the wye must be grounded either at the MicroTurbine or at the transformer. See the wiring diagrams on the previous page. SERVICE BULLETIN Typically, under NEC provisions, 600 VAC copper conductor is used for the terminal block connection in the high voltage side of the MicroTurbine’s User Connection Bay. Per UL 2200, the tightening torque on the terminal block must be as follows: Wire Size (AWG) 2/0 - #3 #4 - #6 #8 Torque (Lb-In) 50 45 40 3 SB0003 March, 1999 This information is confidential and proprietary to Capstone.
