Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: Interconnection for Capstone MicroTurbines Protective Relay Functions The Capstone MicroTurbine is equipped with built-in relay protection functions, which are performed by a microprocessor and other firmware. These functions are described in the Protective Relay Technical Reference (410033) and are field adjustable. Upon shipment of a new MicroTurbine, factory settings of the protective relaying meet UL 1741. Generally, the required functions include (Based on Rule 21, California; NYSIR has slightly different requirements): Overandundervoltagetripfunctions: 138 Volt, or lower, trip at no more than 0.1 sec From 245 Volt to 138 Volt, trip at no more than 2 sec From 245 to 305 Volt, trip at no more than 2 sec More than 305 Volt, trip at no more than 0.1 sec Overandunderfrequencyfunctions: 60.5 Hz at no more than 0.1 sec 59.3 Hz at no more than 0.1 sec. Automaticsynchronizationtoworkinparallelwithutilitygrid. Anti-Islanding algorithm, preventing the formation of an unintentional island. An output device, the contactor, providing disconnection from the grid, when a protecting device initiates a trip. Transfer trip/reclosure blocking at a specified time, for example, not less than 60 seconds. Additional functions can be installed externally when required by a utility company, for example, ground fault relay (device 51N). Application Review by the Utility Company The utility will conduct a review of the design package to ensure that the plans/design satisfy the goal of attaining a safe, reliable, and sufficient interconnection and will satisfy the technical requirements for interconnection. As a result, the applicant will be notified within a 10-day period of approval, disapproval, or of the need to satisfy additional requirements, or to perform another study if necessary with an explanation.
