The fuel temperature must be maintained at least 10 °C above the Cloud Point. Therefore, the Cloud Point of the specific fuel must be known and accounted for in the application. 3. The fuel’s Kinematic Viscosity must remain below 5 mm2/s at all operating conditions. Heating may be required to meet this requirement. 4. Fueltemperaturemustnotexceed50°CortheFlashPointofthefuelblend, whichever is lower. Other Liquid Biofuel Considerations The Capstone liquid fuel systems are also able to operate on liquid biofuels that do not meet all of the ASTM D6751-07a specifications. Table 2 indicates fuel properties that can be outside the biodiesel limits. This means that off-spec biodiesel or mixtures of biodiesel and either methanol or ethanol may be useable. Capstone is currently investigating other properties that may impact combustion (such as the 50% distillation temperature and the surface tension of the fuel), and is interested to assist in projects that have biofuels outside of the current specification limits. Performance Capstone MicroTurbine systems have been tested using biodiesel blends up to B100, and exhibited similar power output and efficiency performance compared to operation on Number 2 Diesel fuel. Note that biodiesel has less energy content than petroleum-based diesel, and therefore the user should expect greater fuel volume consumption (on the order of 15% greater compared with Number 2 Diesel). Exhaust emissions may be slightly worse than operation on normal diesel.
