Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: Liquid Biofuel Requirements - Capstone MicroTurbine Biodiesel Liquid fuel Capstone MicroTurbine systems are able to operate on biodiesel fuel blends which adhere to the ASTM D6751-07a and ASTM D975-07b specifications, with a few additional requirements. The referenced ASTM D6751-07a spec is for B100, which is 100% biodiesel and is intended to be blended with other fuels. There are several important specification differences between Biodiesel and Number 2 Diesel fuel that need to be accounted for. Table 1 shows the specifications for “Flash Point” that Capstone requires compared to these ASTM standards. Table 1 –Flash Point Specifications for Number 2 Diesel and Biodiesel Flash Point 93 °C min 52 °C min(1) 80 °C max ASTM D93 Note 1 – It is permissible, and is normal practice, to blend Diesel Grades No. 1 and 2 during cold months, in which case the minimum flash point is permitted to be 38 °C. The maximum flash point requirement of 80 °C is critical for reliable starting, and may be met in several ways: 1. Blend biodiesel and petroleum-based diesel fuels to achieve this maximum flash point. Blends with as much as 20% biodiesel (B20) may meet the Capstone requirement. However, the user should confirm that the flash point requirement is met for their specific fuel. 2. Since the concern with flash point is starting, the system can be started on normal diesel fuel, and switched to biodiesel once it is fully operating. Microturbines have been operated with 100% biodiesel using this method. The fuel system should be purged of the biodiesel during shutdown so that only fuel with the lower flash point is in the fuel lines ready for the next start. Note that unexpected system shutdowns will require manual priming of the fuel system prior to restarting to purge the fuel system and assure that only the normal diesel fuel is provided to the injectors. The priming sequence may need to be performed more than once. Refer to the Capstone MicroTurbine User’s Manual (400001) for how to start the Liquid Fuel model’s priming cycle. In addition to meeting these fuel properties, as well as all other requirements for liquid fuels in the Capstone MicroTurbine Fuel Requirements Technical Reference (410002), there are four application requirements that must be adhered to: 1. Fuel provided to the microturbine must be less than 3 months old. Therefore, the date of fuel manufacture must be known and on-site storage time controlled to meet this requirement. Using older fuels may result in difficult starting and increased deposits in the microturbine fuel system. 480034 Rev B (January 2009) Page 2 of 4 Capstone reserves the right to change or modify, without notice, the design, specifications, and/or contents of this document without incurring any obligation either with respect to equipment previously sold or in the process of construction.
