Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Enhanced Liquid Fuel System -- Model C30 MicroTurbine Summary of Features Major features of the Enhanced Liquid Fuel System are described in the paragraphs below: Auto Priming Capability A software-driven auto-priming sequence has been added to improve start reliability by eliminating the undesirable presence of excess air in fuel system components and fuel lines connecting to the MicroTurbine. This new capability also extends the service life of components such as the electric fuel pump, by ensuring increased lubrication of parts. Additional components such as a liquid fuel pressure sensor and priming solenoid assist the MicroTurbine in regulating fuel pressure. In addition, the software can generate a Fail to Prime warning, notifying users of the need to re-start the priming sequence. Drain System Improvements Drain system improvements include the addition of a drain tank fuel-level float sensor to detect the amount of fuel present in the tank at all times. Fuel level detection removes the customer requirement to manually check the fuel level and drain the tank, thereby allowing truly remote operation. In addition, an integrated drain tank return pump can return excess fuel from the drain tank to the external source without manual intervention. Low-power Operation Capability Injector modifications and software improvements have increased combustion stability, allowing operation at levels as low as 0 kW. This lower operating level allows the MicroTurbine to re-charge the battery in Stand-Alone mode. The increased combustion stability is a result of idling on a single injector, which now allows the igniter to be dormant during steady-state, lower-power operation. In addition, new flame-out detection logic has been added to automatically re-light systems during injector switching or transient conditions without shutting down the MicroTurbine. Inlet Fuel Filtration Electric fuel pump life has been improved through an upgraded inlet filter (standard 2-micron, 10-micron eliminated). Improved filtration significantly reduces wear on hardware components, resulting in longer service life. Introduction of the 2-micron filter eliminates the customer requirement for the external fuel option kit. Integrated Boost Pump Integration of an internal boost pump allows a much lower inlet pressure of ñ5 to +5 psig, thus eliminating ìfail to lightî faults caused by externally-supplied low-inlet fuel pressures. Improved Fault Detection Software enhancements have improved fault detection for the following conditions: • Worn fuel pump indicated by excessive drain tank fuel levels (fatal fault) • Fuel starvation indicated by low fuel manifold pressure (fatal fault) • Clogged injectors indicated by fuel manifold pressure exceeding default (warning fault) • Excessive pump voltage for a given fuel manifold pressure (warning fault) 410017-001 Rev A (July 2002) Page 2 of 11 This information is proprietary to Capstone Turbine Corporation.
