The on-line directories were taken from the following organizations: • Quebec Lumber Manufacturers' Association (QLMA), 2002. • Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), 2002. • Council of Forest Industries (COFI), 2002. • Council of Forest Industries Northern Operations, 2002. • Canadian Forests, 2002. • Forintek Canada Corp., 2002. • Maritime Lumber Bureau (MLB), 2002. • Nova Scotia Business Directory, 2002. • British Columbia Manufacturers' Directory (BCMD), 2002. • Interior Lumber Manufacturers' Association (ILMA), 2000. Initially, it was decided to conduct the survey by using electronic-mail addresses (email). However, since only 1 out of 3 companies had publicly available electronic mail addresses this idea was abandoned. Consequently, a mail survey was used, although this increased costs and time substantially. 3.2. DESIGN O F T H E SURVEY The principles of the Tailored Design Method (Dillman, 2000) for conducting surveys were taken into consideration as much as possible. The steps taken to reduce the main sources of error in surveys (Dillman, 2000), are given in section 3.2.1. 3.2.1.
