3. METHODOLOGY The study collected primary data from Canadian sawmills that produced kiln dried wood. The initial part of the study included an extensive literature review. Subsequently, a questionnaire was developed to fulfill two objectives: 1) to provide detailed information for benchmarking kiln drying problems across Canada, and 2) to facilitate a comparison with data from an existing European study. This comparison would identify major similarities and differences in kiln drying problems and issues between the two regions. 3.1. POPULATION OF THE STUDY A two-page questionnaire (see Appendix I) was developed and mailed to every wood product plant or division that had kiln drying facilities across Canada. Canadian divisions of U.S. companies were also included. The questionnaire was kept short to encourage a high response rate. The study addressed companies with kiln drying facilities that produced: • primary wood products (e.g., dimensional lumber, or treated lumber), • secondary wood products (e.g., value added products like doors, or flooring), • both primary and secondary wood products. The addresses of these plants or divisions were located from Madison's Canadian Lumber Directory (McNutt, 1998). The total number of plants or divisions under investigation was 372. Considering the small number for the population, it was decided to include all those plants or divisions in the survey. The list of all these companies was the sample frame, which represented the population of the survey (Dillman, 2000). Since the abovementioned directory was not completely current, the addresses were checked using other sources. For this reason, certain on-line directories were used. In case a company's address was found to differ between the on-line directories and Madison's Canadian Lumber Directory, the address taken from 32
