Application Guide for the Copeland Fuel Gas Booster on Non-Pipeline Gas Key Points 1. Sour gas is any gas that contains impurities which form acidic products. Biogas may contain carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptain, which form Carbonic and Sulfuric acids. These acidic byproducts severely corrode many materials used in normal construction including exposed copper and mild steel engineering components. Most Anaerobic Digesters will produce a Gas with 40% carbon dioxide and 0.3 – 2% hydrogen sulfide {H2S} (3-20,000 ppm) and significant mercaptan. 2. The gas supply and all connected equipment and materials may be operating in an acidic, wet condensing environment. 3. Dissimilar metals will corrode when galvanic conditions exist. 4. Increased levels of water and water vapor will increase the chemical corrosion process. 5. Chemical corrosion rates double for every 10°F increase. 6. Stainless steel and Viton seals are chemically resistant to biogas. 7. During normal system operations, liquid will condense in both the low and high- pressure gas streams. This liquid must be periodically drained. 8. When the Microturbine and system shut down, stored pressure can force liquid to flow toward the system discharge. Provisions must be made to prevent this liquid from entering the system. Liquid must never be allowed to enter the Microturbine or system. 9. Provisions must be made for the safe removal and appropriate disposal of liquids and other contaminants that are removed from the fuel gas. 10. Pressure and Temperature determine the amount of water vapor that a quantity of gas will contain. The rate of gas flow in a gas drying system is one of several factors that determine water removal rate. Gas drying equipment must be sized correctly to insure that sufficient water vapor is removed for the application (eg. Deliquescent dryers). 11. The suppler of gas drying equipment should be contacted for their recommendations. 12. All deliquescent dryers consume the drying chemical during normal operation. This chemical must be replaced on a scheduled basis to maintain proper gas drying capability.
