Capstone Turbine Corporation UPS Controller User’s Manual 2. For Reduced Power Demand – When Power Demand levels drop to a point that one or more engines can be shut down and still meet the demand, the engine with the highest ON Timer value will be switched off first after 15 minutes. If more units can be shut down and the remaining still meet the demand, each subsequent engine will be turned off 15 minutes after the previous. For example, if a drop in power demand results in three microturbines requiring shut down, it will take 45 minutes (15 minutes per microturbine) before all three engines shut down Regardless of whether engines have been commanded OFF or not, the UPS Controller will adjust the commanded power output to each engine in High Efficiency mode so that the total output is responsive to a reduction in customer Power Demand. Changing Dispatch Mode The system will respond to a commanded switch from High Efficiency to UPS Mode, and will quickly transition all Hybrid UPS microturbines to UPS Mode. In addition, there will be no intentional delay to respond to a command from the building management system to change back from UPS to High Efficiency Dispatch Mode. However, the system will still transition into High Efficiency by starting microturbine engines one at a time, as described above. Emergency Mode and Disabled Units Any Hybrid UPS microturbine that has entered Emergency Mode, or has been disabled from the MultiPac group, will be taken out of the UPS Controller’s calculations for determining power demand capacity and selection for switching ON or OFF as defined above. If this occurs while the system is in High Efficiency Dispatch Mode, it will cause a recalculation of which microturbines to switch ON or OFF as in the Changing Power Demand section above to meet the customer Power Demand. Alarm Condition Signaling Each Hybrid UPS microturbine monitors many performance parameters – including power output, inlet air temperatures, inverter component temperatures, and incoming fuel pressure. A configurable set of alarm conditions is available to drive two output conditions. The two output signals are automatically sent to the customer’s building management system using discrete outputs. The two alarm conditions to be signaled are: 1. Orderly Shutdown – if an alarm condition is detected that has the potential to shut down output power to the critical loads in 5 minutes or more, an Orderly Shutdown alarm signal will be automatically provided. This can be due to low state of charge in the batteries, loss of control power for over one minute, or other potential problems. The purpose of this alarm is to provide time for the external control system to take immediate preventive action and/or execute an orderly facility shutdown. 2. Imminent Shutdown – an Imminent Shutdown alarm will be signaled if the system is able to identify a problem that will result in shutdown within a few seconds, such as a severe overload, loss of inverter reserve capacity loss of control power for over 14 minutes, or other fault condition. In this case, the external control equipment can take automatic pre-programmed actions, such as activating an automatic transfer switch to bring the utility source directly to the critical loads.
