Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: Offshore/Coastal Systems – Hazardous and Non-hazardous Installations Installation Refer to Appendix A, “Bebco Installation Drawing,” when installing a Class I, Div. 2 system. All electrical conduit, switchgear, gas lines and safety valves should comply with the area classification. The installer must be aware of all applicable codes. When selecting the area on the platform where the Microturbine will be installed, the following guidelines should be followed. Failure to do so will significantly increase maintenance and may reduce the life expectancy of the unit. Refer to the “Installation and Permitting Guidelines Technical Reference” (410034) for general installation and this section for topics specific to hazardous areas. There are several guidelines to follow: • The unit must be located on the platform at a height of at least 12 m (40 feet) above the sea water line. • A solid floor must be provided to install the Microturbine. Grated floors are not permitted. The floor must cover the entire maintenance area of the MicroTurbines. Typical dimensions are 2.4 meter (8 feet) wide by 3.7 meter (12 feet) long. For installations with multiple MicroTurbines, maintenance areas may overlap on adjacent systems. • A 2.1 meter (7 feet) high wall must be installed on both sides along the longer edge of the maintenance area. • For installations on a beach front (at sea level), if the horizontal distance to the beach is less than 800 meter (0.5 miles), the unit must be located inside a properly ventilated room (see Installation and Permitting Guidelines (410034) for ventilation requirements) • All four lifting eyebolts must be used to hoist the equipment, and the maximum angle off of vertical is 30°. A spreader bar may be necessary. • Service access is critical to the installation site. Serviceable components are as large as several hundred pounds and as small as screws refer to the Outline and Installation Drawing (516236) for all dimensional information, including service access clearances. • If the unit is going to be welded to a platform, use great caution and follow these guidelines. The key issue is to have any external connections removed during welding. This includes RS-232 cables, modems, power cables, grounding cables, I/O connections to the UCB, and any other conceivable connection. Instruct the welder to attach his return cable to the platform side of the weld, not the MicroTurbine side. Start the weld melt on the platform and then move the melt to the MicroTurbine base. This assures that grounding is made before the arc comes in contact with the MicroTurbine. 480010-001 Rev.
