Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: C200 Hazardous Location Turbine Assembly Compliance with the requirements detailed in this document is essential to avoid problems that may affect the performance, life, reliability, warranty and the safe operation of the turbine assembly. Enclosure The enclosure meets all the requirements of hazardous location operation. The base plate, frame, and all exposed panels are Type 316 stainless steel for high humidity and corrosion resistance, and outdoor (marine environment) operation. The enclosure, along with inlet and outlet ducting, is designed and tested to protect against foreign object and water ingress, and the roof is sloped to prevent pooling of water. Pressurization The ATEX specification requires a minimum 0.2 inch H2O positive pressure in a hazardous location enclosure. The C200 hazardous location turbine assembly provides a redundant pressurization system that makes use of two pressurization blowers that provide the required positive pressure. During normal operation both blowers are running. If the first blower fails, the second blower will supply the required pressurization, and the operator will receive an alarm indicating that one of the blowers has failed. The pressurization system also performs 10 exchanges of air volume during the purge cycle, as required by ATEX specifications. The pressurization system also includes a pressure switch, and differential pressure transmitters. The pressure switch detects loss of pressure and will trigger a system fault if the enclosure loses pressure. The system fault prevents the equipment from operating in the event of a hazard condition brought on by a loss of pressure. The differential pressure transmitter sends an analog signal to the hazardous location controller for continuous remote monitoring of enclosure pressure. A corrosion resistant pressure gauge provides indication of the current level of pressurization within the enclosure. Gas and Heat Detection The C200 hazardous location turbine assembly contains two gas detectors and two heat detectors. One gas detector and one heat detector are located in the engine section, and the other gas detector and heat detector are located in the air inlet section of the enclosure. Each gas detector monitors gas levels within the enclosure and triggers a system fault if gas levels are above the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). Each heat detector contains a sensor element that triggers a system fault if it detects temperature higher than the specified setpoint. The system fault prevents the equipment from operating in the event of a hazardous condition brought on by overheating or a buildup of gas. Battery Packs The turbine electronics in the C200 hazardous location turbine assembly is equipped with two battery packs. Each battery pack contains internal contactors used to isolate the battery pack and safety shutdown as a result of heat or gas detection or loss of pressurization, and during purging. The contactors are controlled externally by the hazardous location controller. 480047 Rev.
