solids in suspension. Modification of existing dairy management practices may be required to achieve the full benefits of anaerobic digestion. Figure 2 below, shows how a solid waste management facility can be incorporated in an existing dairy waste-processing stream. If low or moderate concentrations of sand are present the entire waste stream may be discharged to an anaerobic digester, bypassing the existing screen and gravity separators. If high concentrations of sand are present, the existing gravity separators may remain in place. Under such conditions, a reduced quantity of organics will be converted to gas.
