Capstone Capstone Turbine Corporation 6025 Yolanda Avenue Tarzana, CA 91356 1 USER'S SPECIFICATION The User's Specification describes commands for users of the Capstone MicroTurbine, and can be distributed freely without restriction. 1.1 USER AND MAINTENANCE PORTS The Capstone MicroTurbine Digital Power Controller (DPC) provides two serial ports for communication - the User Port and the Maintenance Port. Both user and maintenance port function identically, so they may be used interchangeably. 1.1.1 User Port The User Port has a standard 9-pin connector with the same pinout as a PC computer serial port. The user may connect a computer (using a null modem adapter, maximum 50 ft per RS-232 specification) or a modem to this port. The user modem is detected automatically and configured for automatic answer by the Capstone Digital Power Controller (DPC) software as part of the configuration check during the power-up sequence. The user may specify certain operational characteristics such as the voltage and frequency operational limits, command the Capstone MicroTurbine on or off, and retrieve operational history and data for external analysis. The user serial port requires a password for control operations. In its unprotected state, information and data is available for monitoring only. Control or operating parameters may be changed after a password is entered. After a long period (5 minutes) of inactivity, the user port reverts to its unprotected state. 1.1.2 Maintenance Port The Maintenance Port has a standard 25-pin connector as defined by the RS-232 specification. The maintenance port may have a computer (via null modem adapter) or a modem connected. The maintenance modem is detected automatically and configured for automatic answer by the Capstone Digital Power Controller (DPC) software as part of the configuration check during the power-up sequence. The maintenance port permits exactly the same functionality as the user port. After a long period of inactivity (5 minutes), the maintenance serial port reverts to its unprotected state. 1.1.3 Hardware Configuration The default hardware configuration for each port is 57,600 bits per second, 8-bit word length, no parity, one stop bit, and hardware handshake for flow control. This document defines the command structure and available commands for each port. 1.1.4 Multiple Unit Command Structure The command syntax provides for multiple units operating as one larger unit1. Reference Section 1.3.1 below for the command structure. 1.1.5 Notation This section provides definition for common notation used throughout this document. 1 Multiple unit operation is planned for a future release of the software.
