Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Dual Mode System Controller (DMSC) The external motor-operated disconnect must be rated for reverse power feed. Suitable markings must be provided at the disconnect device to notify operators that power may be present on either set of terminals. WARNING The DMSC logic is designed to prevent automatic reclosing of the external motor-operated disconnect if the disconnect was not tripped by the DMSC. Addition of any other control signals to this external disconnect may result in cyclic opening and reclosing, transfer of protected loads back to utility power while the microturbines are operating in Stand Alone mode, or other undesirable operations that may damage equipment. Design of any additional control functions must include consideration of the desired operating scenarios defined in this document. CAUTION Wiring Connections Figure 9 shows an elementary diagram of the connections between the DMSC and the remote motor-operated disconnect device. The DMSC interfaces with the remote disconnect device through high-voltage cable wires and low-voltage cable wires. These must be run in separate conduits. The distance from the DMSC to the remote disconnect device should not exceed 500 feet. The high-voltage wires consist of nine conductors to carry all high voltage circuits including: three for the Line (Utility) side power connections, three for the load/microturbine side power connections and three for the motor operator connections. The Line and Load power connections should have branch circuit protection on each phase at least equal to the associated line and load fuse ratings listed on the DMSC circuit diagram in Appendix B. The cables should be sized according to local and national codes appropriate to branch circuit fuse rating and conduit type. All cables in the high-voltage harness should have a 600 V, 105 °C rating. The low-voltage wires have two conductors for the shunt trip and a shielded 3-conductor cable for the auxiliary contact. The shunt trip wires should be in the range of 10 to 14 AWG and be sized to give a low enough resistance to ensure reliable shunt-trip operation. (The calculation of the maximum cable resistance is part of the shunt-trip evaluation.) The shielded 3-conductor cable for the auxiliary contact should be in the range 18 to 20 AWG. The shield should be terminated to a ground terminal (see Figure 9) at the DMSC end only. All cables in the low voltage harness should have a 300 V 70 °C rating. The motor operator circuit wiring may have to be placed in a separate conduit from the higher voltage Line and Load power circuits, if required by local or national codes.
