Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Dual Mode System Controller (DMSC) Remote Motor-Operated Disconnect Interface Requirements The DMSC provides the logic and control signals to automatically open and close a customer- supplied remote disconnect device. The device can be a motor-operated switch or motor- operated circuit breaker. The relay logic in the Dual Mode System Controller is designed to provide the power necessary for proper remote device operation under all the expected operating conditions. The following paragraphs describe the basic requirements for the motor- operated disconnect device. Refer to Figure 9 for a block diagram of the disconnect device with utility and DMSC interconnections. Disconnect Device Type and Ratings A three pole disconnect device is required, and must be rated for the circuit voltage and currents. If the disconnect device is a switch, it must have load breaking capability equal to the maximum expected load currents under all potential operating scenarios. If the disconnect device is a circuit breaker, it must be capable of breaking the maximum available short circuit current under all operating scenarios. The disconnect device must be capable of retaining a closed position when control power is not available (typical solenoid operated contactors are not suitable). Motor Operator The motor operator is used to close and open the disconnect device at the command of the Timer Relay (TR) in the DMSC. A voltage source, external to the DMSC, must be provided to turn the motor operator on and off. The voltage source is connected between the COMMON connector on the motor operator and the DMSC (see Figure 9). The voltage source should be rated for 250 VAC maximum for an AC motor, or 125 VDC maximum for a DC motor. Wires connected to the voltage source should be protected by fuses rated for 15 A maximum current. Power connections from utility lines to the voltage source are made as required by the equipment used for the voltage source. An example connection is shown in Figure 9. Since control power for ON and OFF operations can remain on, the motor operator must include its own automatic internal isolation switches to cut off control power when the open and close sequences are completed. Shunt Trip The DMSC uses a 24 VDC, 0.1 F capacitor shunt-trip drive circuit to open the disconnect device when normal power is not available. Therefore, a 24 VDC shunt trip with integral isolation switch must be provided, and able to open the disconnect device with a tolerance of ±10% on the initial capacitor charge voltage. The effect of cable resistance between the DMSC and the remote disconnect device must be considered when evaluating whether the DMSC will operate the shunt-trip of the disconnect device. Auxiliary Contacts A set of auxiliary contacts must be provided in the disconnect device; with one normally open (NO) and one normally closed (NC) contact. The DMSC uses a common return for the NO and NC contacts. The auxiliary contact must be rated for 24 VDC, 1 A and must operate correctly for a current as low as 100 mA. 410071 Rev D (January 2010) Page 24 of 71 Capstone reserves the right to change or modify, without notice, the design, specifications, and/or contents of this document without incurring any obligation either with respect to equipment previously sold or in the process of construction.PDF Image | Dual Mode System Controller DMSC
