books and courses and the Internet. Finally, 2.2% of respondents in Canada turned to associations for assistance. This option was not available in the European survey. 4.3. RESULTS SUMMARY Results about profiles of companies were presented. These included type of products produced, number of kilns, capacity of the largest kiln, most frequent type of kiln used, source of energy to operate kilns, annual dried lumber production, species commonly dried, geographic location of respondents, markets served and number of employees. Respondents indicated that their most serious dried product quality problems were only moderately important. The spread of final moisture content between boards and achieving target moisture content were the most important dried product quality problems, while air flow was the most important drying process issue. All kiln control issues investigated were considered important, with quality control during drying being the most important. Kiln operators appeared to be most knowledgeable about drying issues compared to sales personnel, equipment suppliers, distributors and customers. Most companies turned to kiln manufacturers for assistance when they faced drying related problems. The majority of respondents did not intend on upgrading their kilns within the next five years. Seven variables (including certain kiln drying problems and issues and the capacity of the largest kiln) were found to affect the decision to upgrade kilns. Differences between companies that had different characteristics were presented. Hardwood operations generally had more concerns about dried product quality issues. A comparison of the Canadian and European situations showed that, while both regions primarily dry softwoods, there is a higher proportion of hardwoods in Europe. In terms of number of employees, Canadian wood producers tend to be larger than their European counterparts. 79
