Since the European results were on a 1 to 5 interval scale, they were first converted to a 1 to 4 interval scale by multiplying by 4/5. Furthermore, the European survey measured the opposite quality, since 1 signified an unimportant problem with the level of kiln drying related knowledge, while 5 signified a very important problem. In contrast, in the Canadian survey, 1 indicated that the particular group was not at all knowledgeable and, therefore, there was a problem (i.e., lack of knowledge), while 4 signified that the group was very knowledgeable and, therefore, there were not any problems with insufficient knowledge. Therefore, after European results were converted to a 1 to 4 scale, they were then subtracted from a value of 4. At this point, it must be noted that the European questionnaire (see Appendix III) is not considered particularly well designed. For all the groups investigated, significant differences (alpha = 0.05) in kiln drying related knowledge were found between the two regions and the knowledge level was always higher in Canada. The results are given in table 27. Table 27. Regional comparison: results for kiln drying related knowledge of groups. Who Provides Assistance Respondents indicated who provided assistance in the case of kiln drying problems. In the Canadian survey, this was an open ended question and the total adds up to more than 100% (see Table 28) since each respondent could provide more than one answer. Therefore, results were converted by multiplying by 100/141.4 in order to conduct the regional comparison. t Statistic 77PDF Image | KILN DRYING PROBLEMS AND ISSUES IN CANADA
