differed significantly. In all these defects, the problems were more serious for hardwoods than for the groups that included both softwoods and a combination of softwoods and hardwoods. For the variable spread of final moisture content, two homogeneous groups were identified and the problem was more important for softwoods than for hardwoods. In the case of electrical energy consumption, the Scheffe test detected two homogeneous groups with means that differed significantly and the issue was more important in companies that dried both softwoods and hardwoods than for those that dried either softwoods or hardwoods exclusively. Finally, forthevariablespraying system, theScheffetestcouldnotidentifywhichspeciesgroupsdiffered significantly, since it is not as powerful as the Kruskal-Wallis test (Zar, 1999). However, companies that dried both softwoods and hardwoods considered this issue as more important than companies that dried softwoods only. 4.1.13. Differences between Regions Responses were collected from nine Canadian Provinces, namely: British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. However, certain Provinces have rather similar characteristics in terms of species dried and, therefore, it was decided to create groups based on these similarities. The 5 regional groups were: 1. Coastal British Columbia 2. Interior British Columbia 3. Prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) 4. Eastern Canada (Quebec and Ontario) 5. Maritimes (New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that significant p-values were found for two variables: a) thermal consumption, and b) spraying system. energy 65PDF Image | KILN DRYING PROBLEMS AND ISSUES IN CANADA
