Three hundred and seventy two (372) questionnaires were sent out during the first mailing and two hundred and ninety seven (297) during the second. The second mailing aimed at addressing plants or divisions that did not respond to the first one. However, in cases of companies that had several divisions, some respondents provided only the name of the company and not of the particular division. As a result, it was not possible to identify which divisions replied and, therefore, questionnaires were sent out to all relevant divisions of those companies, even those that had already replied to the first mailing. 3.4. DATA ANALYSIS In order to analyze the data collected from the mail survey, both descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The kind of data provided by each question (i.e., data on a ratio, ordinal or nominal scale) and the study's objectives indicated the most suitable analyses. A model was developed using the multivariate technique of Logistic Regression. Microsoft Excel 97 and SPSS 10.0 for Windows were the software used to conduct the analyses. 3.4.1. Analysis of Canadian Data from the Questionnaire Certain questions collected data using a nominal scale. These included items like types of wood products produced, kiln types, source of energy to operate kilns, species dried, markets served, intention to upgrade kilns, individual or organization that provided assistance in case of kiln drying problems and location of respondents. Frequencies were used to analyze this type of data. The main body of the survey consisted of rating questions on a 4- or 5-point scale. The objective of these questions was to measure the level of importance of certain kiln drying issues and dried product quality problems and the level of kiln drying related knowledge.
