Finally, questions 15 through 18 collected company profile information like location, number of employees, range of products produced, and company name. The last question requested the participants' name and address in case they required a summary of the results. The language used was simplified so that respondents could understand what they were being asked (Fink, 1995). A small number of open-ended questions were used. This type of question can be difficult to interpret and it is recommended that their extensive use be avoided (Czaja & Blair, 1996). However, their presence was considered essential since it was not realistic to list all possible answers and keep the survey short. Care was taken to ensure that they could be answered in a rather straightforward way. Therefore, subjects did not have to think hard to provide answers since this could make them avoid answering the particular question (Dillman, 2000). The open-ended questions used referred to standard procedures or practices followed by the company (e.g. tree species used, or individual or organization that provides assistance in case of a kiln problem). Finally, the time required to complete the questionnaire was estimated to be between 10 and 15 minutes which is considered ideal for mail surveys (Rea & Parker, 1997). 3.2.3. Cover Letter Two cover letters (see Appendix II) were prepared to accompany the questionnaire for the two mailings. The University of British Columbia letterhead was used for both cover letters to give a more professional appearance (Rea & Parker, 1997). Cover letters emphasized the usefulness of the results from both an academic and a managerial perspective (facilitating research and benchmarking, respectively). The following items were included in the first cover letter: • Topic of the study • Organization conducting research • Importance of the study • Selection process for subjects 36PDF Image | KILN DRYING PROBLEMS AND ISSUES IN CANADA
