collect information about kiln drying problems and issues of Canadian companies (see Appendix I). The questionnaire was kept short to ensure high response rates. It included nineteen questions in two pages. The first eight questions did not ask for sensitive information, but rather simple company facts. This was decided in order to motivate subjects to continue answering without making them feel offended or threatened (Rea & Parker, 1997). More specifically, information on the following company characteristics was obtained: types of products manufactured (i.e., primary or secondary), number of kilns, capacity of the five largest kilns, most common types of kiln used, sources of energy to run the kilns (i.e., purchased or created in-house), annual kiln dried production, names and proportions of species commonly dried, and markets served. Question 9 attempted to identify the companies' intention to upgrade their kilns as well as the estimated time to do so. Question 11 determined the person or organization that provided assistance when the company experienced problems. Questions 10, 12, 13, and 14 formed the main part of the survey. These questions tried to uncover the importance of various drying issues by means of a scale ranging from 1 (unimportant) to 5 (very important), except for question 14 where the scale ranged from 1 (not at all knowledgeable) to 4 (very knowledgeable). Information on the following areas was collected to benchmark the Canadian wood products sector: • Drying process • Kiln control • Dried product quality • Kiln drying related knowledge of groups 35
