The results can also be used as a benchmarking tool for wood products companies to enable them to assess their kiln drying problems and issues, and identify their major weak points in relation to the Canadian average. This practice can be a useful managerial tool for providing companies with a more realistic profile of the Canadian kiln drying situation. Furthermore, information regarding companies' characteristics (e.g., type of equipment used) will provide an additional indication of the current status of the Canadian wood products industry. Detailed information regarding kiln drying is considered beneficial (Rice, 1994) for both upper and middle managers of drying operations since it provides invaluable assistance in decision-making. Comparing the Canadian results with the European situation can reveal differences in kiln drying problems and ways to address them between the two regions. This is helpful since weak areas compared to Europe will be identified. Subsequently, the Canadian wood products industry will attempt to increase its efficiency in those areas with assistance from research institutes. Such a practice is considered to be vital in the face of the severe international competition present. The main objectives of this study were to benchmark the kiln drying related problems and issues of Canadian companies, and to compare the Canadian and the European kiln drying situations so as to identify major similarities and differences in kiln drying problems and issues. This second objective was possible due to the existence of a similar study conducted in Europe (Welling, 2000a). Whenever the term Europe is used (except for section 2.10.), it refers to following fourteen countries where data were collected: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The questionnaire used in the European survey can be found in Appendix III. Specific objectives of this study included: 1. To assess the significance of problems and issues related to the drying process, kiln control, and dried product quality of Canadian wood products companies. 5PDF Image | KILN DRYING PROBLEMS AND ISSUES IN CANADA
