2.9.1 VALUE STREAM MAP AND FUTURE STATE Value stream mapping (VSM) was developed by Toyota to assist companies with the concept of lean manufacturing. Value stream mapping is a visual representation of the material and information flow of a particular product family (Tapping et. al 2002). It consists of the creation of a current state map and a future state map. The current state map graphically represents the flow of information and material as a product goes through the manufacturing process. The future state map shows the improvements of the system by elimination or reduction of the non-value added activities (Carr 2005). VSM is vital for understanding changes and opportunities for improvement (Quesada and Buehlmann 2011). Figure 2 shows an example or a VSM. Figure 1.
