The tangential surface is any surface parallel to the bark; like the radial surfaces, there can be an infinite number of tangential planes exposed if you wanted to go to the trouble of cutting them. The appearance of the large earlywood pores is quite pronounced on the side grain in ring porous species. In contrast, no such distinction exists in diffuse porous species where all the pores are essentially the same size.
