1030 Clarke Side Road • Box 5395 • Station B • London, ON Canada N6A 4P4 unifin@kochind.com SERVICE BULLETIN DATE: August 31, 2000 TO: micoGenTM Heat Recovery Unit Users Contact: Carmine Fontana, Customer Service Manager RE: Application Condition Problem From: L. Brescacin, Engineering & QA Manager PHONE: (519) 451-0310 Ext 143 EMAIL: FontanaC@kochind.com FAX: (519) 451-0310 There is an electrical control failure mode in some of the early micoGenTM models that can cause over- heating of the heat recovery fluid. The scenario results when the micoGenTM is in the recovery mode and electrical failure or controller failure occurs. Under this condition the diverter (by-pass damper) stays in the recovery position and the pump stops operating. If the MicroTurbineTM continues to operate, hot exhaust gas will continue to flow across the heat exchanger causing the heat recovery fluid to over heat and potentially boil. If the recovery fluid piping system is not designed for high temperature applications of up to 360 degrees F. depending on the system pressure and fluid, the hot recovery fluid could damage the piping and/or result in a spillage of the heat recovery fluid. This is of particular concern for plastic piping. If the piping is not suitable for this high temperature scenario we recommend that the diverter be manually set to the by-pass mode as described below and notify UNIFIN so that the situation can be addressed. Should the above scenario occur, we recommend that the MicroTurbineTM be immediately turned off and left off until the diverter is manually moved to the by-pass mode. This can be done by removal of the side or front panel, depending on the model, and then removing the actuator clevis pin and lifting the connecting arm up as far as it will move. The unit serial numbers affected and which panel to remove are listed below. After the diverter has been manually moved to the by-pass mode, the Capstone MicroTurbine can be safely restarted and operated. Newer models of the micoGenTM, when inter-connected electrically with the MicroTurbineTM can be set to automatically turn off the MicroTurbineTM when an electrical or controller failure occurs. In such cases the MicroTurbineTM must still be left off until the electrical or controller problem is solved or until the diverter is manually moved to by-pass. Please direct any questions about the above to our Customer Service Department. See contact information above. A retrofit package is being developed that will resolve this problem in future. When developed, our service representatives will modify the affected units. Serial Numbers affected that require side panel removal to move the Diverter to By-pass 9224-99-1; 9301-99-1 & 2; 9356-99-1; 9492-99-1; 9497-99-1; 9532-99-1 Serial Numbers affected that require front panel removal to move the Diverter to By-pass 0034-00-1; 0084-00-1; 0118-00-1 to 5; 0119-00-1 to 7
