To: From: Date: Subject: Capstone, Capstone Distributors and Authorized Service Providers (ASPs) Copeland Corporation March 18, 2002 Product and Applications Safety Notice - CONFIDENTIAL Fuel Gas Booster (ìsystemî) Heat Exchanger Corrosion Sent via e-mail Biogas Applications Copeland design upgrades and application/site modifications to date have improved system robustness against early liquid water failures. However, over the last 4-6 weeks, we have begun to experience performance issues and failures due to corrosion (oil/gas heat exchangers). These corrosion issues could result in biogas and system oil leaks and in turn, create a safety hazard. We are asking distributors and ASPs to inspect the oil and gas heat exchangers on all biogas installations for any signs of corrosion. Should there be any corrosion or leaks with either heat exchanger, please contact Copeland immediately for service parts and corrective action. Over the past year, Copeland has invested extensive resources to develop and offer a controlled release of its system for biogas applications. It is clear that variability in biogas composition and gas treatment methods is leading to widely different field results and levels of corrosion. The Copeland system, as currently designed, is not suitable for biogas applications. Effective immediately, Copeland is suspending acceptance of new orders for biogas systems and equipment skids due to corrosion related failures and safety concerns. For biogas systems already purchased but not commissioned, and/or in distributor inventory, please contact Copeland for a mutually acceptable commerical arrangement. We have discussed our reduced biogas market participation with Capstone and obtained their agreement for Copelandís position going forward. Pipeline Gas Applications We also recently learned of a pipeline gas application where corrosion led to a leaking oil heat exchanger on a Copeland system. This may be an isolated incident and or due to non-spec pipeline quality gas. However, to be cautious we are asking distributors and ASPs to inspect the oil heat exchanger on pipeline installations for any signs of corrosion. Should there be any corrosion or leaks with the oil heat exchanger, please contact Copeland immediately for service parts and corrective action.
