RS-485 Modbus Communication Connections Cable Requirements Cable parameters include the following items: • All control wires must be 18 to 22 AWG. • Use a 2-conductor (or a multi-conductor) shielded cable for the control signal connections between the APS Terminal Block and Modbus Slave Instrument Devices (see Figure 8). The cable should be rated at 300V, at 75 °C. The cable length must be 4,000 feet or less. • Use a 2-conductor (or a multi-conductor) shielded cable for the connections between the APS Terminal Block and a Modbus Master Device (see Figure 8).
