Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: Capstone Service Network Application and Installation Application of Capstone SCADA is recommended across Capstone’s entire line of MicroTurbine solutions and is functional anywhere with internet access. Internet Access Choosing how Capstone SCADA will be connected to the internet is an important decision. The most cost effective and common connection is to use the existing facility network. The use of DSL, Cable and land line services has proved to be extremely reliable. The data upload rate requirement for each MicroTurbine being supervised is under 0.5 kilobits per second. When choosing a connection method, this figure should be kept in mind. There are no special requirements for the network configuration of the CSN Gateway. The gateway can be assigned a dynamic IP address by either a facility server, or the ISP through the DSL/Cable modem. If a hard line is used, note that the connection must be “always on”. No public static IP address is necessary. The Capstone SCADA system will initiate its own communication via an encrypted and secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) across the internet. The customer is responsible for correct installation, configuration and maintenance of telemetry (internet connection). Below are some examples of typical installation configurations: Notes: 1) All network wiring should be done using Category 5 or higher Ethernet cable. 2) Local Building Codes must be complied with in all installations. 3) Communication cables and power cable should be run in separate conduits. Single MicroTurbine Applications: In a single MicroTurbine application, the Capstone Gateway 101 needs to be installed in the User Connection Bay. The Gateway 101 can be connected directly to the UCB’s User port (9 pin) via an RS232 serial null modem cable. A single Ethernet CAT 5/6 cable can then be run from the Capstone Gateway to whatever device is providing internet connectivity. Mounting hardware, including the RS-232 data cable and power harness, required to install the CSN Gateway to the Connection Bay is provided in the Capstone Gateway 101 kit (p/n 520705- 100). See Gateway 101 Kit Installation Work Instructions 440136 for more details. Use of the Capstone Gateway 101 requires limiting standby time. The standby timer should therefore be set to 2 hours or less to ensure sufficient reserve to restart the MicroTurbine. 480012 Rev A (April 2006) Page 8 of 13 This information is proprietary to Capstone Turbine Corporation.
