Each of the boxes indicating a Hybrid UPS microturbine in emergency mode will turn red until the utility reconnect sequence is completed and faults have been cleared. As soon as the reconnect delay sequence is completed, the UPS Controller will check to confirm the desired operating status of the system. If the desired operating mode remains UPS Mode, an engine cooldown will be initiated. Otherwise the sequence will immediately transition to High Efficiency Mode. Emergency Shutdown Transitions Several situations can cause automatic shutdown of the system, including the Imminent Shutdown alarm condition noted above. One input that can drive automatic transition is a change in condition of the bypass scheme, for example due to the UPS Controller issuing an Imminent Shutdown alarm signal. This will bring utility power directly to the critical load, and disconnect the Hybrid UPS microturbines’ output from the critical load. In this case, the UPS Controller will continue operating the microturbines in either of the desired states of UPS Mode or High Efficiency Mode, or the Emergency Mode if there is no utility voltage available. The display screen will automatically show the top level view, as in Figure 4, with the position of the bypass scheme and utility and critical bus voltage status. If the UPS Controller has been set for High Efficiency Mode and the utility voltage has remained stable, the appropriate number of microturbine engines will continue to generate power to meet the commanded power demand. That power will then be exported to the utility connection. The system is then ready to pick up the critical load when the bypass scheme reconnects to the Hybrid UPS microturbine outputs and disconnects from the utility. If the Hybrid UPS microturbines experience a major fault, they will automatically initiate a total system shutdown sequence through the UPS Controller. The fault codes can then be seen on the Maintenance screen shown in Figure 6 of the UPS Controller display panel.
