Capstone Turbine Corporation UPS Controller User’s Manual Operating Mode Selection Once the UPS Controller is set to Remote, the BMS or external control device can set the microturbines to run in either UPS Mode or High Efficiency Mode. The BMS or external control device can communicate to the UPS Controller via Modbus RTU or TCP/IP or optionally though discrete I/O connections. The desired operating mode can be selected at any time, either while the microturbines are in Standby Mode or already operating in a given mode. Typically, a Hybrid UPS system will be started and left to continue operating for extended periods. The UPS Controller can then be switched periodically between UPS Mode and High Efficiency Mode as determined by the building management system or other external control system. Power Demand The UPS Controller decides the amount of power to be provided by each microturbine, depending on the mode of operation. In UPS Mode, the output to the critical load will be shared equally among all the Hybrid UPS microturbines that are on and receiving power from the utility. In Emergency Mode, the output to the critical load will likewise be shared equally among all operating Hybrid UPS microturbines. When operating in High Efficiency Mode, the UPS Controller will receive the desired microturbine power output as a digital communications value from a customer building management system using the Modbus TCP/IP digital communications port, or optionally through an analog input connection such as a 4-20 mA signal. The UPS Controller may then determine which microturbines to operate, and those selected to operate will then share the requested power demand equally. Any power difference between what each microturbine is generating and the actual critical bus load will be made up in either import or export of power to or from the utility connection in each Hybrid UPS microturbine. High Efficiency Dispatch Logic The C65 Hybrid UPS System comes standard with a High Efficiency Dispatch Logic similar to “run time balance” with the goal of evening out the run hours on all units over time. If Dispatch Mode is set to High Efficiency, the Power Demand value in the UPS Controller along with a fixed Microturbine Capacity value for each connected Hybrid UPS microturbine is used to determine how many Hybrid UPS turbines to command ON or OFF. The Microturbine Capacity value is preset at 65 kW and is used to represent the maximum available power for each Hybrid UPS microturbine in the MultiPac. Two timers, one for engine ON and one for engine OFF for each connected Hybrid UPS microturbine are maintained in the UPS Controller, and are triggered by the turbine engine entering and leaving the Load State. When a Hybrid UPS microturbine’s engine enters the Load State for any reason, the ON Timer will begin counting and the OFF Timer will be reset to zero. When the engine leaves the Load State, the ON Timer will be reset to zero and the OFF Timer will begin counting. After the UPS Controller has calculated the number of engines required to meet the customer Power Demand, it will then decide which engines to operate by selecting the ones with the longest OFF Timer values first. If the OFF Timer values are the same, the Hybrid UPS microturbine with the lowest unit number will be selected. A MT Rotation Timer is used to start an additional turbine (the unit with the longest time off) and after that unit has reached load state, the unit with the longest run time will be shut down. The additional unit is started as determined by the MT Rotation Period setting. The default period for rotation is 24 hours and it can be changed externally from the BMS via Modbus.
