Capstone Turbine Corporation UPS Controller User’s Manual Description Overview The UPS Controller provides monitoring and control of up to ten Hybrid UPS microturbines, and acts as the interface between these microturbines and a building management or other external control system. It also provides a direct user interface for selected control and monitoring of the Hybrid UPS microturbines, and for system setup using a PC with Capstone Remote Monitoring Software (CRMS). The UPS Controller also includes a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) that can accommodate custom control programs as needed for unique applications. The microturbine can efficiently use a wide range of approved hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuels. Major Components The UPS Controller consists of several major components, as shown in Figure 1. The functions provided by each major component are as follows:  Display – the display is linked with the PLC. It provides a graphical user interface to allow users to view selected information about the status of each Hybrid UPS microturbine, as well as an overview of the system. The display also has a built-in function to allow remote access over a network or the Internet. It provides configurable password-protected access for monitoring and/or control.  System Wakeup Button – allows the UPS Controller to be powered up if it has been non-operational for an extended period of time.  Master Control Board Assembly – as the heart of the UPS Controller, this assembly is a set of control circuit boards that create a virtual microturbine master. As the master, this board set communicates with each of the Hybrid UPS microturbines over a proprietary Ethernet communications link to change operating modes, set power demand levels, and synchronize total system operation.  Programmable Logic Controller – the PLC acts as a communications gateway between external devices and the master control board assembly. It also provides some ladder logic for system control and can accept additional I/O cards for unique application needs.  Ethernet Switch – allows network connectivity to building management or other control equipment using Modbus TCP/IP protocol. It also provides a port for local connection to a PC that is operating CRMS. Internally, the switch is connected to the PLC, the display, and the master control board assembly. It also includes Ethernet connections for each individual Hybrid UPS microturbine for data monitoring and service functions.  Power Supply Section – a small, battery-operated UPS converts 110-220 VAC single phase input power to conditioned 24 VDC power for the UPS Controller components. The UPS will automatically shut off power when AC input is not detected for 15 minutes and the system can be manually put back into service after an extended outage.
