PRELIMINARY Maintenance The Capstone 60 is a high technology product which requires only limited maintenance. The Capstone 60 uses a proprietary air bearing system. Use of air bearings eliminates the need for lubricating oil and an oil-based lubrication system. Also eliminated are the environmental hazards associated with lubricating oil. By using air bearings, Capstone significantly reduces the amount of time required for maintenance operations. Normal preventive maintenance activities on the Capstone 60 require only minutes. The user may perform maintenance on the external fuel filter and the inlet air filter. Capstone recommends that only Capstone Authorized Service Providers maintain all other Capstone 60 components. WARNING: The Capstone 60 contains lethal energy. Do not open the enclosure except as directed in this manual. Only Capstone Authorized Service Providers should open the enclosure. Preventive Maintenance - Fuel Filter The user should replace the external fuel filter element periodically to ensure unrestricted flow of clean fuel to the Capstone 60, necessary for optimal performance. The recommended interval for this replacement is every 8,000 hours of operation, or annually, based on typical very clean natural gas fuel supplies found in the United States. It is common to find significant amounts of contamination in newly installed fuel lines. A new installation should inspect the external fuel filter frequently until the contamination trapped in the filter falls to a consistent rate. Some new installations have plugged the external fuel filter in just one day. WARNING: Natural gas is flammable and explosive. Use no spark or open flame near natural gas. No smoking near natural gas. Use approved procedures when servicing natural gas lines or natural gas filters. Preventive Maintenance - Air Filter The user should inspect the air inlet filter periodically to ensure unrestricted flow of clean combustion and cooling air to the Capstone 60. The recommended interval for this inspection is every 8,000 hours of operation or annually, based on indoor or clean environment operation. Outdoor operation, especially in areas subject to wind and airborne dirt or dust, will require a significant reduction in this interval. Extreme conditions may require inspection and/or service of the air inlet filter as often as once per week or 150 operating hours or less. CAUTION: The Capstone 60 requires clean, dust free air for operation. Do not operate the unit without the air filter in place. Do not remove or service the air inlet filter any time the unit is operating. The Capstone 60 inlet air filter may be replaced or cleaned, as necessary.
