Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: Capstone 60 MicroTurbine Application Information Operational Information The Capstone 60 MicroTurbine system is a compact, low emission, power generator providing up to 60 kW of electrical power. The Capstone 60 MicroTurbine generates electricity from natural gas fuel with low exhaust emissions (<9 ppm NOx). Solid-state power electronics allow Grid Connect and/or Stand Alone operation. NOx The MicroTurbine system incorporates a compressor, a recuperator, a combustor, a turbine, and a permanent magnet generator. The rotating components are mounted on a single shaft that rotates at up to 96,000 rpm (at full load), and is supported by patented air bearings. The generator is cooled by a shaft-mounted fan, thus eliminating the need for liquid cooling. Output is 400 to 480 Volts, 3-Phase, 3-wire wye or 4-wire wye, with 100 amps per phase (maximum) and 50 or 60 Hertz AC power. Also available are Stand Alone models capable of operating in either Grid Connect mode or in Stand Alone mode. Grid Connect Operation The Capstone 60 MicroTurbine, when in Grid Connect mode, is connected in parallel to the grid and delivers electricity to grid-connected loads. Electricity generated by the Capstone 60 MicroTurbine is supplied to these loads only when the utility is present. During grid supply interruptions, the Capstone 60 MicroTurbine senses the loss and immediately disconnects from the grid. When the utility returns, the system can restart automatically and resume supplying electricity to the connected loads. In Grid Connect mode, the Capstone 60 MicroTurbine is a current source only. The existing grid is used for both voltage and frequency reference. Stand Alone Operation The Capstone 60 MicroTurbine, when equipped with the Stand Alone option, the connected loads may be powered directly, and the unit becomes both a voltage source and a current source. A battery system provides energy for starting and for transient energy demands. Capstone MicroTurbines equipped with the Stand Alone option are also capable of operating in the Grid Connect mode, either via manual changeover, or automatically via the Capstone Dual Mode Controller (sold separately). During grid supply interruptions; the Dual Mode Controller may be configured to automatically transition the MicroTurbine from Grid Connect mode to Stand Alone mode.
