Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA User’s Manual: Advanced Power Server (APS) Model 145 User's Manual 3.5.2.7 Stopping a Stand Alone System The turbines in a MultiPac can be stopped at any time. To stop the Stand Alone turbines, first select the Stand Alone group and send a stop command from the touch screen and/or a remote stop switch, if used. Alternately, disable the system to stop the turbines in the group. If the APS has been configured with a remote start/stop switch (e.g. a DMSC), simply set the switch to STOP or OFF to stop the system. To stop the group from the APS touch screen, touch the red STOP icon as described in Control Functions on page 19. Touching the red SYSTEM DISABLE icon will also send a stop command to the group. A command to stop or turn off the Stand Alone turbines first disables power output. The turbines then charge their batteries, which can take up to 20 minutes. Finally, the turbine shutdown process includes a cool down period, which can last up to 10 minutes. 3.5.3. Dual Mode Operation Dual Mode operation consists of switching Dual Mode turbines (i.e. turbines that can operate in both Grid Connect and Stand Alone modes) from Grid Connect operation to Stand Alone operation, or vice versa, during grid loss and recovery. Dual Mode operation in a MultiPac requires that a Dual Mode System Controller (DMSC) be connected to the APS. The following paragraphs describe how Dual Mode operation is accomplished in an APS-controlled MultiPac. 3.5.3.1 Capstone DMSC The Capstone DMSC is an accessory that enables Dual Mode turbines to automatically switch from Grid Connect operation to Stand Alone operation when a utility power failure occurs. The DMSC provides the logic for an electrically operated circuit protection device to isolate protected loads during a utility power failure, and it commands the turbines to switch to Stand Alone mode to supply power to the protected loads. When utility power is restored, the DMSC automatically returns the turbines and the protected loads to Grid Connect operation. The DMSC enables the APS to switch Dual Mode turbines within 10 seconds of power outage during a transition between Grid Connect operation and Stand Alone operation. This is the default setting, but it can be adjusted with a user setting that extends the duration of the power outage to the load if a site has special requirements. The 10 second maximum transition time from detection of grid loss to Stand Alone operation is known as fast transfer. The APS, C1000 series turbines, C200 turbines, and C65 turbines with software version 4.50 and higher all have fast transfer capability. 3.5.3.2 Configuring Dual Mode Each Dual Mode turbine used for switching between operating modes must be enabled for Dual Mode operation as described in the applicable turbine user manual (Table 1). In addition, system settings must be configured for both Grid Connect parameters and Stand Alone parameters, since the turbines will be operating in both modes at different times. The DMSC must also be connected to the APS to perform the switching function. Refer to the DMSC Technical Reference (Table 1) for details. 400026 Rev E (March 2014) Page 28 of 56 Capstone reserves the right to change or modify, without notice, the design, specifications, and/or contents of this document without incurring any obligation either with respect to equipment previously sold or in the process of construction.PDF Image | Advanced Power Server (APS) Model 145 User's Manual
