Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Capstone Model C30 Acoustic Emissions ANALYSIS The Analysis of a noise generally refers to the examination of the composition of noise in its various frequency bands, such as octaves or third-octave bands. AUDIO FREQUENCY Audio Frequency is the frequency of oscillation of an audible sine wave of sound. Typically, any frequency between 20 and 20,000 Hz. Refer to Frequency BACKGROUND NOISE Background Noise is the total of all noise in a system or situation, usually independent of the presence of the desired signal. In acoustical measurements, strictly speaking, the term "background noise" means electrical noise in the measurement system. However, in popular usage the term "background noise" is also used with the same meaning as "residual noise." BAFFLE A Baffle is a shielding structure or series of partitions used to increase the effective length of the external transmission path between two points in an acoustic system. For example, baffles may be used in sound traps or to decrease the sound transmitted, while affording a path for air flow. BAND A Band is a segment of the frequency spectrum. BAND CENTER FREQUENCY The designated (geometric) mean frequency of a band of noise or other signal. For example, 1,000 Hz is the band center frequency for the octave band that extends from 707 Hz to 1,414 Hz, or for the third-octave band that extends from 891 Hz to 1,123 Hz. BAND PRESSURE (OR POWER) LEVEL The pressure (or power) levels for the sound contained within a specified frequency band. The band may be specified either by its lower and upper cutoff frequencies, or by its geometric center frequency. A modifier, for example, an octave band, a third-octave band, or a 10-Hz band, often indicates the width of the band. BROADBAND NOISE Broadband Noise is noise with components over a wide range of frequencies. CUTOFF FREQUENCIES The frequencies that mark the ends of a band, or at which the characteristics of a filter change from pass to no-pass. CYCLES PER SECOND A Cycle Per Second is a measure of frequency numerically equivalent to Hertz. DAMPING Damping is the dissipation of energy with time or distance. The term is generally applied to the attenuation of sound in a structure owing to the internal sound-dissipative properties of the structure or owing to the addition of sound-dissipative materials. 410025-001 Rev A (September 2002) Page 30 of 36 This information is proprietary to Capstone Turbine Corporation.
