Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: C200 Hazardous Location Turbine Assembly Operation The hazardous location controller controls the pressurization system and startup of the C200 hazardous location turbine assembly. Before the turbine start sequence begins, the controller activates a three minute purge cycle in the enclosure. The controller also monitors the pressure switch, gas detector, and heat detector in the hazardous location enclosure for start permissives and alarms. The controller will start the turbine if pressure, gas, and heat are at acceptable levels, and it shuts down the turbine(s) in the event of an alarm condition indicated by one of the gas or heat detectors or pressure switch. Capstone turbines, unlike traditional reciprocating engines, are designed for continuous operation. Capstone strongly recommends that units installed in marine environments be configured to run continuously under normal conditions. For multiple unit installations, all units operating simultaneously share the load equally. Configurations with units operational and units in standby are not recommended. Hazardous Location Controller The hazardous location turbine assembly is operated remotely, via the external hazardous location controller. The hazardous location controller provides Start/Stop switches for each system, as well as indications on the status of each turbine assembly. It also provides remote communications. A touch screen on the front panel provides the Human Machine Interface (HMI) for the hazardous location controller. The HMI display consists of multiple screens that contain turbine parameters and controls. See Figure 20 for an example screen that includes the tools to start and stop the turbine assembly as well as monitor key data related to hazardous location operation. This screen indicates the availability of power to the blowers, enclosure pressure, and whether or not any faults have been triggered by the gas, pressure, or heat detectors. Figure 20.
