Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: C200 Hazardous Location Turbine Assembly Gas and Heat Detection The C200 hazardous location enclosure contains the gas and heat detection components described in the following paragraphs. Gas Detectors Each gas detector installed in the C200 hazardous location enclosure is an explosion-proof infrared gas detector. See Figure 5. One gas detector is wall-mounted in the engine section in the vicinity of the fuel inlet and fuel metering device. The other gas detector is mounted above the pressurization blowers on the air inlet side of the blowers. Internal wiring is routed through sealed conduit and wire connections are contained in an explosion-proof junction box. Both gas detectors continuously monitor the enclosure for the presence of combustible gases or vapors, and the air inlet gas detector is in the best position to detect any combustible gas entering the enclosure from the outside. If either gas detector detects combustible gas, it transmits a fault signal to the controller, which performs a safe shutdown of the engine and prevents the engine from starting if combustible gas is present in the enclosure. Refer to Table 1 and the gas detector vendor specifications on page A-10 for more details. To gain access to the air inlet gas detector for servicing, the air inlet plenum must be removed from the front access door. Heat Detectors See Figure 6. The heat detector is a rate-compensated sensor element with all stainless steel external construction, and the electrical connections are enclosed in an explosion-proof junction box. One heat detector is installed in the engine section and one heat detector is installed in the air inlet section. The heat detector is triggered if the temperature at the location of the detector exceeds 135 °C (275 °F), and it transmits a fault signal to the controller, which performs a safe shutdown of the engine and prevents the engine from starting if enclosure temperature is at a hazardous level. Refer to Table 1 and the heat detector vendor specifications on page A-15 for more details. NOTE 480047 Rev.
