component of the biogas), emissions of this greenhouse gas are also reduced. After the digestion process, the residue has a less oxygen- consuming composition than the original manure. This residue has a fertilising effect 10–20% better than untreated manure, with no significant increase in odour. Performance Biogas produced in the reactor drives a 450 kW generator which is connected to the grid (at 20 kV). Heat from the motor and the exhaust gases is recovered by heat exchangers which provide 650 kWth to the district heating system. Excess gas is used in a combined biogas–natural gas boiler with a capacity of 1.3 MWth. To cover peak loads, a 1.3 MW natural gas boiler is also available. The energy efficiency of the CHP plant is 85–90% and the amount of heat and electricity produced is 4,200 MWh and 2,000 MWh respectively. The CHP plant supplies the Trädgårdsstaden with 60–70% of its energy demand. The total amount of energy supplied in 1997 was 7,500 MWh.
