HEV/Transit Hybrid Electric Vehicle Charlotte, North Carolina Charlotte Douglas International Airport purchased two of the EcoSaver IV Hybrid Electric (HEV) buses in December 2007 from DesignLine USA, LLC. They bought them as a way to cut their fuel consumption and lower emissions. An interesting story was relayed to DesignLine by the airport management as follows: After Hurricane Ike, when there was a shortage of fuel in the North Carolina area, the airport was low on diesel and in order to keep their buses running, many of them were given jet fuel. The Capstone microturbine aboard each of the buses worked beautifully with the jet fuel and the airport was very pleased with their performance. They were equally pleased with the fact that the Capstone microturbines can run using alternative fuel which saved them in a pinch.
