Government/Municipal Sauk County Landfill Madison, Wisconsin The Sauk County Landfill, located just northwest of Wisconsin’s capital city of Madison, has over 650,000 tons of waste. In the past, methane gas produced by decomposing waste at the 20-acre site was just burned off in an open flare. Today this renewable energy is captured and is used to fuel 24 C30 Capstone MicroTurbines® providing electricity that is then sold back to the utility – enough to power over 300 homes. Although this site started with just 12 microturbines in 2003, it has consistently grown in size as additional microturbines were added so that currently it is the largest landfill microturbine installation east of the Rockies. “Using the Capstone turbines is a great plan because they produce lower emissions than we are currently producing by burning the methane in an open flare.
