Conceived by Quandel Construction, UGIPS teamed to develop a savings assessment associated with on-site power generation in comparison to running a second transmission line to the facility as well as backup diesel generation. A C1000 Capstone turbine (with four 200kW turbine generators expandable to five) and a Thermax absorption chiller were selected as the best solution to provide 800 kW of power and 300 tons of chilled water to the data center. This project will reduce emissions of CO2 by 1,468 tons per year, which is equivalent to moving 243 cars from the road. The configuration allows for N+1+1 reliability of the data center while providing excess heating and cooling capability to the PSECU facility. At the projected day one loads, the 2.5 MW diesel generator can support the entire building and Data Center loads. If there happened to be an extended electrical grid outage, the Capstone system can support ongoing Data Center operations indefinitely, on natural gas. “UGIPS worked closely with PSECU and their engineering team (Bala Consulting Engineers) to develop a unique solution to the requirements of modern data centers,” said Chuck Miller, GM of UGI Performance Solutions. “The system provided will deliver the energy security they require while reducing their overall cost of operations. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with PSECU.” Some other architectural highlights include an exterior glass curtain and terra cotta panels, an exercise trail around the facility’s perimeter, a first floor entrance with water features and glass handrail stairs, a state-of-the-art security/audiovisual systems, a day care center with playground area and a full kitchen facility. This project is seeking a LEED Gold certification through the United States Green Building Council and is expected to be completed in October 2013.
