COSSATO SPOLINA WWTP SPOLINA, ITALY Before Italy’s first CR200 was installed at the Cossato Spolina Wastewater Treatment Plant, which serves 520,000 nearby residents, the majority of the 2,600 cubic meters of biogas produced each day was flared into the atmosphere as waste. Only a small portion was used to warm the plant’s digester. Today, with a Capstone CR200 and an external heat exchanger installed, every cubic meter of biogas is efficiently used to fuel the microturbine, which produces 1.7 million kW-hour each year for the plant’s equipment and 2.3 million kW-hour of thermal heat each year to warm the digesters. The combined heat and power system reduces the wastewater treatment plant’s carbon dioxide output by 1.8 tons per year. “Now with the micro-cogeneration plant, we will save a lot of money with electricity self production and the Green Certificates incentives,” said Fabio Dalla Villa, the plant’s technical manager.
