An Energy Cloud with a Silver-Plated Lining Essential to Faith Plating’s operations has been the need for a reliable supply of electricity and hot water. External factors threatened the business in 2001: Power shortages racked California, triggering blackouts and steep price escalations. The EPA issued new emission restrictions on hot water boilers, essentially mandating retrofits of existing systems or outright replacement with modern, low-polluting models. Future EPA regulations promised to be even stricter, raising the specter that current upgrading could soon be rendered obsolete and require further retrofitting. Larry Meyer, Assistant General Manager of Faith Plating, wrestled with the company’s energy crisis. On one workday commute, he heard a radio news broadcast about Capstone MicroTurbines. Larry already knew about advances in distributed generation (DG) technology that creates electricity and heat directly at a user’s site. He knew that microturbines represented the leading edge of DG, designed for low maintenance and low emissions. The news item provided one more important fact: a local company, Capstone Turbine, is the world’s leading manufacturer of microturbines. Larry concluded that a Capstone solution may help solve Faith Plating’s problems by generating reliable, onsite electricity at a predictable cost and simultaneously drive a water heating system with emissions low enough to satisfy the toughest pollution regulations. After weighing all the alternatives, Larry proposed a Capstone MicroTurbineTM installation to company owners. The decision was unanimous—Faith Plating would make the move to DG with a Capstone MicroTurbine solution. is lost transmitting it to end-users. According to a joint DOE-EPA report, the average efficiency of fossil-fueled power generation is less than 33%, and 5-10 points of that Steam rises from metal plating solution heated by Faith Plating’s fuel efficient Capstone combined heat and power system. The exhaust from the microturbine array heats dozens of working tanks at this old Hollywood facility. Maximizing the Benefits and the Funding Faith Plating contacted their gas utility Southern California Gas Co. (www.socalgas.com) for consultation on the planned Capstone MicroTurbine installation. Alma Briseno, Account Executive, and Christina Lupichuk, Senior Account Executive with SoCalGas, worked directly with Faith Plating to ensure the company made a successful transition to DG and realized the maximum benefit from their decision. The account executives helped Faith Plating pursue state and federal funding opportunities that are available to users of DG technologies like the Capstone MicroTurbine. Faith Plating participated in SoCalGas’ Select Technology Demonstration Program and SoCalGas’ Self Generation Incentive Program.
