improvements in kiln drying process as high priorities are no longer realistic (Laurenzi & Greene, 1996). The importance of kiln drying is such that, frequently, it is the most crucial factor that influences the final value of wood products (Hector, 2000). Improvements in kiln drying operations can occur either when the existing procedures are inefficient or when an innovative technique is discovered (Perre, 2001). Thus, wood products companies will become more efficient and better equipped to serve the increasingly demanding customers of today's markets. Therefore, communication between the academic research community and the industry is necessary. This can be achieved by means of a survey aimed at identifying major drying related problems and issues. To this end, the present research benchmarked kiln drying problems and issues of Canadian lumber producing companies. A model was developed to provide a better understanding of which drying issues affected a company's decision to upgrade its kilns. Additionally, a comparison with the kiln drying problems and issues in major European lumber producing countries was performed. This comparison was facilitated due to the existence of similar study in Europe which assessed the major kiln drying issues (W elling, 2000a). This research surveyed the Canadian industry to identify kiln drying problems and give a "snapshot" of the current situation. It was conducted in a way that allowed comparisons to be made with the European situation. The Canadian survey was conducted from November 2002 to April 2003. Chapter 2 presents background information and a literature review on kiln drying and provides a description of the drying process and its problems. Chapter 3 presents the methodology for primary data collection to obtain and analyse the results which are given in Chapter 4. A discussion concerning possible interpretations of the results in Canada and the main differences with Europe is presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 provides concluding remarks about the current status of Canadian kiln drying problems and issues, comparisons with Europe and recommendations for future research. 2
