Capstone Turbine Corporationn21211 Nordhoff StreetnChatsworthnCA 91311 Application Guide: Hot Water CHP Use with the Capstone MicroTurbine An important design consideration to be discussed is exhaust backpressure, since the microturbine cannot withstand over eight inches of water column at the exhaust stack. More than eight inches will create excessive pressure on the turbine rotor and damage the air bearings. Also, as shown in Performance Specifications, there is a loss of power and efficiency for each inch of backpressure increase up to eight inches. Good ducting design and process interface are therefore essential. Another paramount design consideration to be discussed is water system pressure head. To ensure that the intended heat recovery is achieved, water must flow with as few restrictions as possible. Heat exchangers and water piping generate flow friction, and the pumping must be sized such that the pump can overcome the friction. System Sizing Baseload versus peak shaving operation With a 140°F inlet and 160°F outlet water temperatures, you can expect to achieve a heat-to-power ratio of approximately two with properly sized heat recovery. That is, you should expect to recover about 120 kW (> 409,000 Btu/hr) of thermal power when generating 60 kW of electricity. Minimum payback time is realized through maximum operating time of the CHP system. Therefore, Capstone suggests that you run your system for the maximum number of hours possible. System should therefore be sized carefully so that you do not purchase more capital equipment than is necessary to meet your needs with a decent payback. This is most easily achieved with baseload operation such that the microturbine CHP system provides less than 100% of peak facility electrical and thermal needs. Coincident thermal and electrical loads It is important to ensure that you require a significant amount of heat during the same time of day that you require electricity. Otherwise, you will not be recovering heat while generating electricity, and will also not utilize the ability of the system to pay itself off. For a possible example, a pool facility might require electricity during the day, but only require heating during the evening. Such an arrangement would not lend itself to timely CHP payback. Unifin Heat Exchangers Waste heat recovery systems can be sized to fit one per microturbine, or one with multiple microturbines feeding into the inlet. The latter may be more economical from a capital cost perspective. While Capstone MicroTurbine exhaust may be recovered in virtually any make of heat exchanger, Capstone has worked closely with Unifin International to develop an effective solution for the exhaust characteristics of the Model 330 and C60. Unifin waste heat recovery systems are designed to accept the exhaust of single or multiple microturbines in the following configurations: Applications Guide - Hot Water.doc Page 5 of 16 April 19, 2002PDF Image | Capstone App Guide CHP
