High Efficiency Mode The High Efficiency Mode of operation continues the UPS Normal Mode benefits of uninterruptable power, but allows the microturbine to generate its own power to offset utility grid purchases, and allows the added benefit of cogeneration for heat or cooling purposes. The power it generates can be set at more or less than the amount of power the critical loads require, with the utility grid connection automatically taking or giving the difference as required. The power demand can be set locally on the UPS controller or remotely via Modbus. The system must be actively connected to a stable utility grid source for it to enter the High Efficiency Mode. High Efficiency Mode can therefore be thought of as a special case of UPS Mode, where the turbine has been commanded ON and operates in parallel with the utility grid. Emergency Mode The Hybrid UPS system will automatically transition to the Emergency Mode if commanded to operate in either UPS Mode or High Efficiency Mode and utility power is unavailable. Emergency Mode cannot be selected as a desired operating state. In Emergency Mode, power is supplied to the critical load from either the external battery system and/or the turbine generator. An external battery system must be available for the system to operate in Emergency Mode. Standby Mode In Standby Mode, the Hybrid UPS system is disconnected from the grid and critical loads, the turbine generator and power electronics are shut down, but the unit control boards remain active. If left in this state for an extended period of time, the system will also attempt to preserve energy storage life by entering a sleep mode to reduce power requirements, and the Display Panel will go dark. This is the condition the Hybrid UPS system will be in when shipped from the factory and therefore will need to be awoken before brought into service. Standby/Remote System Command A standby or remote command can be initiated from the UPS Controller display panel or though the discrete input connection.  A Remote command will put the Hybrid UPS system MultiPac into either UPS Mode or High Efficiency Mode. The operation mode will depend on the command received via Modbus from the BMS or other external control system. If the 110-220 VAC control power has been unavailable for over 15 minutes, the UPS Controller will need to first be re-powered by pressing the System Wakeup button on the front control panel, or through the discrete System Wakeup input. A Remote command can then be issued once the UPS Controller is restarted and communicating properly.  A Standby command will put the system into Standby Mode. Note that there are actually three Stop commands that can be executed: Normal Shutdown, Fast Stop, and Emergency Stop. Refer to the C65 Hybrid UPS User Manual (400027) for a detailed explanation of each of these shutdown types. Note that the system will transition through several operating states before entering any of the selected modes. 400028 Rev B (January 2014) Page 13 of 35 Capstone reserves the right to change or modify, without notice, the design, specifications, and/or contents of this document without incurring any obligation either with respect to equipment previously sold or in the process of construction.
