Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: Offshore/Coastal Systems – Hazardous and Non-hazardous Installations Operation The MicroTurbines, unlike traditional reciprocating engines, are designed for continuous operation. Units installed in marine environments must be configured to run continuously under normal conditions. For multiple unit installations, all units should operate simultaneously, sharing the load equally. Configurations with units operational and units in standby are not allowed. Description of Components Performance details for the MicroTurbine system may be found in the Model C30 and C60 Performance Technical Reference manuals (410004 and 410005). Gas Detector (Optional) Although not required by NFPA 496, a gas detection system can be installed as an option on BOTH hazardous (Class I, Div 2) and non-hazardous area MicroTurbines. The gas detection system is comprised of a gas sensor assembly, mounting bracket, gas monitor and optional power supply. For further details on gas detection, see Appendix C, “Pressure Switch” and Appendix E, “Gas Detector.” The gas sensor is located inside the enclosure, near the bottom of the package. The gas monitor is mounted on the outside of the package, at the same level as the detector (See Figure 2). The gas monitor provides visual reading of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), fault and alarm conditions.
