Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA User’s Manual: Advanced Power Server (APS) Model 145 User's Manual 3.4. Turbine Operations in a MultiPac The APS controls a group of turbines to operate as a single unit with a combined synchronous output, and it manages the operation of individual turbines within the group to achieve the greatest efficiency. How the turbine groups perform these functions under the control of an APS is described in the following paragraphs. CRMS-APS is used to configure the groups, and the ability to create or modify groups is not available from the APS touch screen. Refer to the APS-145 Technical Reference (Table 1) for a detailed description of the group configurations. 3.4.1. Start Dispatch Each group can be set up to have starting logic that automatically controls how the turbines within the group are started once the group has received a start command. The start sequence is determined by criteria such as an assigned priority level, run time balancing, and maximum off time. 3.4.2. Run Time Balancing The APS can continually cycle turbines by starting a non-running turbine and turning off a running turbine within a group to equalize the operating hours of the turbines. The APS software uses criteria to determine when to turn off a running turbine with more operating hours and turn on a non-running turbine with fewer operating hours to achieve a balance in the running time of the turbines in a group. 3.4.3. Electrical Load Following With Electrical Load Following (ELF) the power setpoint for the group of turbines varies by means of a control algorithm used to regulate power being imported from the utility. In this mode the site must have a power meter, which is communicating with the APS through the Modbus digital communication bus, connected at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) with the utility. The APS automatically adjusts the output of a designated Grid Connect group to maintain the power being purchased from the utility to a level specified by the user. This function can only be assigned to one Grid Connect group. The other Grid Connect groups can be given operating modes that allow them to cover the building base load, while the ELF group regulates the power that is purchased from the utility. 3.4.4. ICHP Thermal Load Following The APS provides additional flexibility when setting up thermal recovery systems as compared to MultiPac systems in which a turbine is the master. The APS acts as a master for each group, and it can control ICHP to use electric priority in some groups and thermal priority in other groups. Refer to the C65 ICHP Application Guide (Table 1) for additional information about how to set up thermal recovery systems. 400026 Rev E (March 2014) Page 23 of 56 Capstone reserves the right to change or modify, without notice, the design, specifications, and/or contents of this document without incurring any obligation either with respect to equipment previously sold or in the process of construction.PDF Image | Advanced Power Server (APS) Model 145 User's Manual
