Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Capstone Model C30 Acoustic Emissions REVERBERATION Reverberation is the persistence of sound in an enclosed space, as a resultant of multiple reflections, after the source has stopped. ROOT MEAN-SQUARE (RMS) RMS is the root mean square value of a quantity that is varying as a function of time obtained by squaring the function at each instant, then obtaining the average of the squared values over the interval of interest, and taking the square root of this average. For a sine wave, multiply the RMS value by 1.43 to get the peak value of the wave. The RMS value, also called the effective value of the sound pressure, is the best measure of ordinary continuous sound, but the peak value is necessary for assessment of impulse noises. SHIELDING Shielding is the attenuation of a sound by placing materials, or other barriers between a sound source and the receiver. SINE WAVE A Sine Wave is a sound wave, audible as a pure tone, in which the sound pressure is a sinusoidal function of time. SONE Sone is the unit of measurement for loudness. One sone is the loudness of a sound whose level is 40 phons. SOUND Refer to Acoustics. SOUND ANALYZER A Sound Analyzer is a device for measuring the band-pressure level or pressure-spectrum level of a sound as a function of frequency. SOUND INSULATION Item (1): The use of structures and materials designed to reduce the transmission of sound from area to another or from the exterior to the interior of a device. Item (2): The degree by which sound transmission is reduced by means of sound insulating structures and materials. SOUND LEVEL (NOISE LEVEL) The Sound Level is the weighted sound pressure level obtained by use of a sound level meter having a standard frequency filter for attenuating part of the sound spectrum. SOUND POWER The total amount of energy radiated into the atmospheric air per unit time by a source of sound. SOUND POWER LEVEL The level of sound power, averaged over a period of time, the reference being 10-12 watts. 410025-001 Rev A (September 2002) Page 34 of 36 This information is proprietary to Capstone Turbine Corporation.
